COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE EVENING PERFORMANCE

Friday 28 and Saturday 29 May 2010

FRIDAY 28 MAY 2010

“Commedia per te” ... for you

“a poco a poco” ...little by little - Combined schools drama students
Directed by Tony Kishawi

A group of drama students drawn from the Brisbane district high schools combine to produce 30 minutes of Commedia mayhem and madness. 'Little by little' you'll be seduced by their charm and talent into the magical world of Commedia, where you, the audience, become a snippet of the scene, a piece of the plot, a magnet for the mayhem.

“Glue” - Birdwing Lane Theatre
Written by Karlo Bran
Directed by Ben Cornfoot, with Clint Bolster and Tammy Weller.

George has invented glue! He's convinced it's going to change the world, but his wife Wendy just isn't impressed. Ah, the trials of matrimony. This could be a short but sweet snapshot of the trials and tribulations of married life, a comment on how modern society stifles our creative juices, a condemnation of monogamy, or just ten minutes of funny stuff. Featuring Commedia-trained actors (who kept changing the lines), Birdwing Lane Theatre presents an absurdist, random, off the wall comedy that will stick in your head like... Glue!

“Commedia Viva” - Commedia Academy of Australia
Written by Antonio (Giri) Mazzella & Giovanni (Sanjiva) Margio

Never heard of Commedia? Well, you're not alone! Now is your chance to meet the characters of the Commedia dell’Arte; agile Arlecchino, lazy Pulcinella, blustering Capitano, miserly Pantalone, pompous Dottore, the swooning Sweethearts, and others.
Learn historical background and social context of early theatre as you laugh your way through comedic skits and scenarios - entertaining for both the novice and the expert

A blend of burlesque & dance…just what is a woman to do when caught in such a dilemma?

The Black Nonnas - Commedia Academy of Australia
Written by Antonio (Giri) Mazzella & Giovanni (Sanjiva) Margio

They're big they're black and they're hairy - these Nonnas are the Italian Grandmothers your mother warned you about!

Maria and Antonietta are on the lookout for husbands, pasta or vino. They enjoy mangling traditional Italian songs about death, tragedy and donkeys.

“Womenʼs Breath” - Carmencita Palemo

Written by Carmencita Palermo

Feminine masks coming to life through dance and music.

Be entertained by the different faces of the feminine mask. A performance merging East and West based on the Balinese Topeng mask dance technique and the Italian Commedia dell'Arte. It is a joyful journey that will take you through Asia, the Middle East and South America. It's an interactive perfomance that will mesmorise you into the rhythm....

Dall'Italia all'Australia (Queensland Premier)

In 1924, the Italian film director Angelo Drovetti embarked on an epic 8,000-nautical-mile voyage with his movie camera.

The result, Dall’Italia All’Australia (From Italy to Australia), is regarded by many as the most comprehensive film ever made of a migrant voyage.

Dall’Italia All’Australia’ chronicles the voyage of the Regina d’Italia (Queen of Italy) - one of three passenger ships first built for the Lloyd Sabaudo Line at the turn of last century.

The film showcases the panoramic views witnessed by Italian, Yugoslav, Greek, Arabic and Jewish migrants as they stood atop the deck of the old steamer during their seven-week world odyssey from Genoa to Australia, by way of Egypt and Sri Lanka, arriving in Brisbane in September 1924.
Author Anthony De Bolfo, who discovered the film, introduces and commentates on the film, with Italian folk music by acclaimed musicians 'I Viaggiatori' the live music is arranged with traditional and original tunes and songs.
I Viaggiatori (The Voyagers) was formed by Kavisha Mazzella to perform a live Italian folk music score for the silent documentary film ‘Dall’Italia All’Australia’ for the 2006 National Folk Festival in Canberra.

Official Launch of the Accademia Italiana della Cucina.

The Accademia Italiana della Cucina is a not for profit organization, founded in Milan in 1953 by a small group of high ranking representatives of various organizations, among whom Orio Vergani. The Stanthorpe/Granite Belt area is home to many Italian families and the teaching of the language has brought the Italian culture into the schools.

The High School has a sister school relationship with a high school in Cividale, in the Friuli region and the students visit on a host family basis in each country.

This year, Stanthorpe High School will host the Cividale students in July and the Italian students will return the hospitality when we travel to their city in September, before touring Italy to experience other regions and visiting the famous Italian icons.

The Italian Week producers are assisting in fundraising via these events for the Italian Immersion Students of the Stanthorpe High School.

ITALIAN WEEK MERCHANDISING - CD 'SUITCASE SERENATE' I VIAGGIATORI

CD ‘SUITCASE SERENATA’ I VIAGGIATORI

I Viaggiatori play lively, old time Italian folk music from the 19th century and beyond. It`s romantic, poignant, frenzied ,sweet and earthy. It`s a place where memory sits down with imagination to share a good coffee and a glass of grappa then have a good yarn.

It`s also a place where accordions, clarinets, bouzoukis, mandolins and tambourines dance with sensual, earthy vocals.

Drawn from over 400 years of storytelling, these songs from Italy and Greece tell of harvests, war and revolution, factory protests, seductions, weddings, funerals and the brave act of migration. The rich melodies make your feet dance and heart sway with abandon.

They present music they performed for the silent Italian documentary Dall` Italia All` Australia.
