Message from H.E. Gian Ludovico De Martino di Montegiordano, Ambassador of Italy in Australia

L'Ambasciatore d'Italia Canberra

Message from H.E. Gian Ludovico De Martino di Montegiordano, Ambassador of Italy in Australia

As Ambassador of Italy to Australia, I have the pleasure to deliver this message on this important occasion, the 4th Italian Week, a celebration of Italy, its culture and its tradition in the city of Brisbane and in the state of Queensland.

Allow me to say that the success of the previous Italian Week celebrations are the results of the precious efforts that the organisers have achieved in the diffusion of the Italian culture. This year Italian Week has expanded its celebration into other areas of traditional Italian immigration, such as Stanthorpe.

This edition of Italian Week, dedicated to “La Bella Figura”, fits perfectly into a typical image of Italy. The attention for beauty, fashion, design and lifestyle is also the focus of this year’s celebrations.

I wish to convey my congratulations and every success to the organisers for presenting a modern, dynamic and thoroughly expressive image of our country.

Introduction by the Consul of Italy for Queensland and The North Territory Dott. Francesco Capecchi

Queensland, a land of great opportunity. A place blessed with splendid sunshine, Queensland, a state of immense social diversity. Since the arrival of Italian migrants over 150 years ago, this ever growing community has been the centrepiece and focal point of multicultural Queensland. It is proven that as Queensland grew and progressed through time and Italian migration increased, Italians soon became one of the largest ethnic, non anglo-saxon communities in the state. At present, there are over 100,000 people of Italian origin currently residing in Queensland. From the latter, approximately 27,000 people speak Italian. These statistics are a clear indication of the sacrifices Italians made to integrate into the Australian way of life without forgetting their country of origin, Italy but more importantly, Italians never forgot their primary objective of establishing a family and creating a brighter future in Australia.

Today Italians are an integral part of Queensland life and once again this year we are proud to cultivate these multicultural seeds planted by Italians of past generations through celebration.

Italian Week, now in its fourth edition, is the official celebration of the “Festa della Repubblica” – Italian National Day. Our passionate lifestyle and that we bring the unique experience of literature, art, cuisine, sport, fashion, music and performing arts, education and language. It is an opportunity for Queensland to be a part of the colour, the magic, the sounds and rhythms of this great culture which will come alive from 22 May to 2 June 2010 in locations all around Queensland.

Therefore, it is my pleasure to extend to Queensland a warm benvenuto to Italian Week 2010.

‘I will never forget the first time I saw Giovanni Pastrone’s extraordinary Cabiria. I wasn’t quite prepared for the sheer scope and beauty of this film. And I was completely unprepared for having my sense of film history realigned. (…) Cabiria is not a collection of great moments or choices, but a magnificent, entrancing whole.’

‘Maciste all’Inferno is “devilishness in five acts”, set in a sensual, Baroque hell. (…) As usual Maciste works his wonder by defeating a fleet of devils, even though in the end it is not his force that wins but the prayers of a child. Maciste all’Inferno is the last film in the series starring Bartolomeo Pagano, who ends with one of his best performances. ‘The stress of the frantic pace of modern life spares no one, not even Maciste, over-burdened with work and besieged by fans. A reinvigorating holiday is what he desires, above all if he can frolic through the countryside in his new little one-seat automobile, baptised “Diattolina” and loved by the giant like a wife. The honeymoon is doomed however by the price of popularity. In the street, the hotel, or the restaurant, everyone has problems to put before the hero of the cinematograph: mischievous brothers, annoying wives, cows that don't give milk, loves not reciprocated.... there is nothing which cannot be solved by Maciste! Maciste in vacanza stands out as one of the most anarchic and amusing titles of the series.’ (Stella Dagna & Claudia Gianetto, Museo Nazionale del Cinema, Turin). ART HISTORY TALK
The battle of the giants: Tintoretto vs Titian
Simona Albanese, University of Queensland
Jacopo Tintoretto’s artistic identity evolved as a kind of conscious and continual revolution against the model for painting provided by Titian. During the middle decades of the sixteenth-century, Titian was the most influential and admired painter in Venice, and the work of many younger painters was indebted to him. Tintoretto however, worked self-consciously in defiance of the older master. Following Titian’s death in 1576, Tintoretto’s art developed in a more mature and individualistic manner which had few precursors or followers. This lecture will analyse the Cristo risorgente (The risen Christ) c1555 from the collection of the Queensland Art Gallery, which shows Tintoretto’s mature style, and compare it to other relevant Biblical subjects, making reference also to works by Titian.

Fumo Negli Occhi

Come and be entertained by the very first debut of the Italian Theatre Company of QLD "Pietro Sillato" inc.

For the first time Brisbane will have an Italian theatre company that will produce an annual event with classics from the Italian comedy.

With their obsession for the "social eye" they will pretend to go to Capri for a "Fine Settimana" to show their neighbours that they can afford it, with hilarious consequences!

Angelo's Fresh Pasta

Angelo first started hand-making pasta under his house and since then, the business has steadily grown to become Queensland’s largest award-winning pasta producer.

From day one, the business was a success: after he delivered his first batch of fettuccine to Sala’s delicatessen, the product was so popular it sold out that very morning. In fact, Angelo was so busy making pasta that he didn’t have time to pack it. Delicatessen owners used to visit his home to weigh and pack their own fettuccine to take to sell in their shops. Angelo’s Fresh Pasta Products is truly a family business. Angelo still makes pasta on the factory floor and is joined by his wife, Val, and three of their children.

"The product speaks for itself," says Angelo, who takes pride in using only natural ingredients and 100% durum semolina flour. No preservatives are added to any product and the fat content is surprisingly low. Angelo uses an array of fresh herbs and spices to flavour his pasta products.

Over the years, Angelo’s range has grown as customers have suggested new products they would like to see added—such as the boutique pasta range, spinach and ricotta filled products and pasta sauces. There are now more than 30 different products, giving customers a considerable selection to choose from.

Angelo’s Fresh Pasta Products has won many awards for their pasta products at the Sydney Royal Food Show and won the Pasta Championship for the 100% Durum Wheat Fresh Pasta category in 2003. Today, they supply the food service industry including restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, delicatessens and even corner stores. Angelo’s is now supplying Hog’s Breath CafĂ© Australia, the largest home-grown restaurant chain in Australia and New Zealand, with their Ricotta and Spinach Filled Tortelloni.

"For the first time in 19 years, we have introduced pasta on our menus across Australia and NZ," says Manfred Lorber, Director of Food Services for Hog’s Breath Cafe Australia. "It didn’t take us that long to find the ideal supply partner. It was very important to us to provide our customers the most authentic experience possible. Angelo’s Pasta was the natural choice. Angelo’s has a reputation for producing the best and most consistent pasta in the Industry."

Hog’s Breath Cafe is very proud to team up with this renowed Italian family who share the same values as Hog’s Breath Cafe to produce flavourful food with passion and attention to detail.

In forty years, Angelo’s Fresh Pasta Products has certainly come a long way. Angelo attributes determination and hard work as the secret recipe of his success.
